Zoom Lens For Canon Slr Cameras

Steven asks…What is a good digital camera for around $500?I don't care if it's compact or not, but I want something with at least 8 megapixels and at least 10X Zoom. I'm a beginner/intermediate photographer, but I would like the ability to use auto or manual modes. Any ideas?
