Lens For Canon 60d

Susan asks…What is better for personal use, a Canon 60D or a Nikon D5100?I want to get a good quality camera for my photography. I will mainly (most probably) only be taking photos of people. I really need to know which one is better for that use. And as I'm new to it all, what is the deal with lenses? Do I need to have many different lenses or just one type or what?
