Canon Compared To Nikon

Robert asks…What kind of camera should I buy?I'm not any sort of professional photographer so forgive the lack of knowledge of terms, but I'm looking for a camera that can use an external lens. My budget is about $600 - $700. I'd mainly be using it to take pictures of sporting events or to take to college for everyday shots, just more detailed and higher quality. I'm pretty stumped between Nikon and Canon so if you could explain why you picked the one you did, that would be extremely helpful!
