Canon Eos 1100d Lenses

Steven asks…how do i really blur the background of the picture i take on my dslr camera?I have a canon eos 1100d, I tried all what I've read about zooming in and that the background should be away from the subject. I also tried to make the aperture higher (decrease F value) but it would just slightly blur, not what I've expected. It would only on small objects such as flowers, cups and so on. But when I try it on people it doesn't work. I have an 18-55 mm lens. Should I buy another lens or is
