Best Lens For Canon Camera

John asks…How to use/read the light meter in a Canon AE1?I'm taking a beginning photography class and I have a Canon AE1 camera, can anyone explain how to use/read the light meter. I know I need to purchase a middle gray card in the near future but other than that how can I read the meter?

Also, what is the red M and red 1 when I look inside the lens?
