Lens For Canon T4i

Ruth asks…Is my Canon lens supposed to make noise?My Canon Rebel T4i just arrived with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens included in the kit.
The lens makes a lot of noise when I turn the focus ring or have the auto-focus on.

My dad (who has been taking photos with SLR cameras for a long time) said that's how it should be. He also showed me his lenses and the sound their focus rings make.
