Lens For Canon Eos Rebel

Susan asks…What camera lens should I get?I have a canon eos rebel xti and I want to get a new lens for my camera since I'm traveling to Kenya soon. I really just want to be able to take landscape views (with some portraits), but I don't want to spend more than $300 on a new lens. I was thinking of a wide angle lens or telephoto, but I'm not sure which to get or what to get.
