A zoom lens is ANY lens that 'zooms' between two focal lengths.
To expand. A 'prime' lens is a fixed focal length.
Examples;
- 200mm - a prime telephoto
- 150-500mm - a telephoto zoom
- 10-20mm a wide angle zoom
- 24mm a prime wide
